Muhajir naama by Munawwar Rana

Munawwar Rana is now a name to reckon with in Urdu poetry. His Nazm 'Muhajir-nama' echoes collective nostalgia of the migrants and the displaced who had left their country and still yearn for their past homes.

Though the poetry is in the context of the Mohajirs who migrated from India after partition and settled in Pakistan or Bangladesh, this poem written in ghazal format has a universal appeal.

muhajir hain magar ham ek duniya chhoR aaye hain

tumhaare paas jitna hai ham utnaa chhoR aaye hain

hansi aati hai apni hi adaakari pe khud hamko
bane phirte hain Yusuf aur zulekha chhoR aaye hain

jo ek patli sadak unnao se mohaan jaati thi
vahiiN hasrat ke khwabon ko bhatakta chhoR aaye hain

vazu karne ko jab bhii baiThte hain yaad aata hai
ki ham ujlat meN jamna ka kinaara chhoR aaye haiN

utaar aaye murawwat aur ravaadaari ka har cholaa
jo ek saadhu ne pahnaai thii maalaa chhoR aaye haiN

Khayaal aata hai aksar dhuup meN baahar nikalte hii
ham apne gaaoN meN pipal kaa saaya chhoR aaye haiN

zamiin-e-Naanak-o-Chishtii, zabaan-e-Ghalib-o-Tulsi
ye sab kuchh paas thaa apne, ye saara chhoR aaye haiN

duaa ke phool Pandit ji jahaaN taqsiim karte the
galii ke moR par ham vo shivaala chhoR aaye haiN

bure lagte haiN shaayad is liye ye surmaii baadal
kisii ki zulf ko shaanoN pe bikhraa chhoR aaye haiN

ab apnii jaldbaazi par bohat afsos hotaa hai
ki ek kholi kii khaatir raajvaaRa chhoR aaye haiN
