RISKS ON THE INTERNET

RISKS ON THE INTERNET-Indian Context.
Internet Crime in India has begun, although still at a nascent stage. It is wise to be aware of the dangers which Indian children may encounter & what precautions you can take.

1) CHATTING - Indian children too have been bitten by the chat bug. They forget the age old advice " DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS". Children may encounter people in chat areas who are mean, insulting, abusive, use vulgar and provocative words & sometimes maybe dangerous.

Teenagers are particularly at risk because they are more likely to participate in online discussions for friendship etc. Although most people in chat rooms appear decent and respectful, some may not be. It is very easy to fool people online. Cyberstalkers & Paedophiles are now present in chat rooms even in India.

Pedophiles are those who intentionally prey upon children. On the web they pretend to be young children themselves, earn the child's trust and gradually seduce them into sexual or indecent acts. Often this happens as the unsuspecting parent sits in the next room. Children are easy targets as they are innocent, trusting and curious.
Although not very likely, this risk does exist that while on chat, a child might provide information or arrange an encounter that could risk his or her safety or the safety of other family members. A Child may waste a lot of time in chatrooms and could increase your telephone expense if your internet works through a telephone line. Also this could sometimes also lead to chat-addiction.

Did You Know ? : MSN decided to shut down chat rooms - September 24, 2003 . The decision is in response to the growing concern about the safety of children who visit these chat rooms that are full of sexually explicit language, cyber sex and sometimes pedophiles.

The recent trend amongst Indian children of sending their snaps via e-mails to strangers is dangerous. Once in the wrong hands, a photograph can easily be used to harass or even blackmail a person. Such cyber crimes have even been registered in India. The age old advice " DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS" remains a golden rule.

More recent incidents involving Indian children......shocking and sad.!

2) SHARE TRADING ON THE WEB- In India it is now possible to buy and sell shares and securities over the Internet . If your child has access to your account and your brokerage password, it is possible that he or she might be able to conduct such a transaction. Keep an eye on this, as it could lead to legal and financial difficulties if things go wrong.

3) GAMBLING ONLINE - Some credit cards are valid outside India and can be used online to conduct a transaction. There are many sites on the web that allow people to gamble with real money or just "for fun." In some cases these sites may be operating legally in the jurisdiction where they are physically located but it is generally illegal (and inappropriate) for minors to gamble regardless of where they are. Most online gambling sites require a person to use a credit card online or write a check to transfer funds. Some credit cards are valid outside India and could be misused online, so remember this.

4) Junk mail (called spam) & viruses. Viruses spare no one and know no boundries. Children may receive e-mails which may contain viruses, worms etc (even from known friends, though not intentionally). Sometimes people are unaware they have a computer virus and send it along unknowingly via e-mail attachments. Since new viruses are created daily they may remain undetected by outdated anti virus softwares. Once in your PC these viruses could damage files or even sometimes make computers crash. It is advisable to keep updating your anti-virus protection and immediately delete spams (unsolicited e-mails). Be selective about posting your e-mail address publicly and invest in a good anti-virus program like Norton Anti-virus.Vandals have not even spared children and targetted them with specially made viruses, like the pokeman virus.

5) Pornography - Adult entertainment is the largest industry on the Internet. It is estimated that over half of internet traffic is pornographic. An innocent keyword typed on some search engines or wrongly spelling a Web site's name can lead children or adults into sites that are shocking and often difficult to escape. A child innocently researching a paper for school could may accidentally come across pornographic content due to its sheer abundance on the web. Monitoring or blocking software which you install is a limited solution as new adult sites are launched daily in abundance. When children come across such sites, they may get upset, embarrassed, frightened or unfortunately even corrupted by them. This could affect the child's psychology, self-esteem. Parental watch & control is always necessary, and should be consistent. It is always advisable to install filtering software which automatically block such sites and keep updating it thereafter.

6) NET ADDICTION or Internet Addiction Disorder- The net can make some people too dependant on it. There are varying opinions on the subject of Internet addiction. Some say that the Internet can be addicting, to the point that it disturbs one's life and the lives of those around him.

Others say that there is no such thing as Internet Addiction Disorder-- getting pleasure out of a computer is not the same as getting pleasure from cocaine or any other drug. Whether there is or is not a bona fide disorder, the Internet is surely disrupting some people's lives.

So, what can should parents do?

Although there have been some cases of Internet abuse (including Cyberstalking, morphing of photographs and Paedophiles ) even in India, these cases are relatively less frequent. Of course, like most other crimes, many cases may going unreported. The fact that crimes are being committed online, however, is not a reason to avoid using these services. To tell children to stop using these services would be like telling them to forgo attending school because students are sometimes victimized there. And would they listen to you? Besides, even the future of Education and Business seems to be getting web-based.

A better strategy would be to instruct children about both the benefits and dangers of cyberspace and for them to learn how to be "net -wise" in order to better safeguard themselves in any potentially dangerous situation. Make sure the kids know it is okay to approach you if they receive strange or harassing e-mails that makes them uncomfortable or they accidentally get to a site you have told them is not appropriate. Let them know that you won't get angry and that it isn't their fault if they do get something strange or they find a site by accident. Establish the ground rules and let the kids clearly know what they are. Every family is different and every child is an individual, so there are no 'magic rules' to follow beyond the basics. The more open you are and the more you listen, the more likely they are to tell you what is going on. Most of all, set a good example by yourself visiting good site!

GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS

"The best way to assure that your children are having positive online experiences is to stay in touch with what they are doing."

In addition, there are filtering features built into the popular Internet browsers (the software you use to access the World Wide Web) that empower parents to limit their children's access only to those sites that have been rated appropriate for children. Other useful tools are software programs that block web sites, newsgroups, and chat areas that are known to be inappropriate for children. Most of these programs can be configured by the parent to filter out sites that contain nudity, sexual content, hateful or violent material, or that advocate the use of drugs, tobacco, or alcohol. Some can also be configured to prevent children from revealing information about themselves such as their name, address, or telephone number. You can find a directory of these filtering programs at www.safekids.com/filters.htm . There are now even special softwares which can even monitor chat online. While technological child-protection tools are worth exploring, they're not a panacea. Regardless of whether you choose to use a filtering program or an Internet rating system, the best way to assure that your children are having positive online experiences is to stay in touch with what they are doing. One way to do this is to spend time with your children while they're online. Have them show you what they do, and ask them to teach you how to use the Internet or online service. You might be surprised at how much you can learn from your kids. By taking responsibility for your children's online computer use, parents can greatly minimize any potential risks of being online. Please do also visit our 'Parents Zone' for safety tips and our 'Fun to learn Web-safety' section for regular updates on Internet safety.

STEPS TO BE TAKEN ONCE IN DANGER.

NO ONE has a right to harass, threaten and disturb you. Once harassment becomes a threat against you, then the harasser has also broken the law and there are a number of steps you CAN take to deal with it including taking help of the Police department. Trying to work out what you have "done" to deserve this will get you nowhere - the attack or harassment will often appear as motiveless and you may have difficulty understanding the psychology of the harasser. With some kinds of online harassment it is better not to waste time trying to work out "why" and to concentrate rather on what you can do to protect yourself & how to end this nightmare.

Kids & Teens: You must tell your parents immediately! If you feel threatened by someone that you know your parents wouldn't want you talking to in the first place, you MUST overcome your fears of "getting in trouble" for admitting you were talking to them, and tell your Parents that you're in trouble. Don't delay! Tell them!

Adults: Tell your spouse and family, and be prepared for an uphill battle, sometimes this may last awhile.Don't ever reply to provocative e-mails if you get them.

If anyone is harassing you or you kids by stalking them online & has begun to disturb you or put your life at risks, you must file a complaint with the Commissioner of Police in your city. The Police can be trusted for it's competence. The Mumbai police recently (Novenber 2000) helped rescue a 16 year old boy who was kidnapped by a lady paedophile. She befriended him through a chat room.
You could also report harassment mails to your ISP (like VSNL etc) & your e mail provider (like hotmail, yahoo etc) & take advice from your technical savvy friends. If you remember, even the creator of the 'I love you' virus was tracked down. So through the I.P address a stalker does leave behind a trail & though difficult it may be possible to trace the stalker.

So remember, If you are being stalked, or harrased you don't have to be a victim. And yes, If possible stay away from chat rooms. The Golden rule "Never talk to strangers" stays a golden rule in today's Cyber world too !!

I WISH YOU HAPPY AND SAFE SURFING FOR GOOD CAUSE...

Harram Relationships, Fahshae and Pornography in Islam!

In The name of Allah,The Most Merciful,The Most gracious

"Surely God enjoins justice, kindness and the doing of good, to kith and kin; and He forbids all that is shameful, indecent, evil, rebellious and oppressive." (Quran 16:90)

Pre-marital relationships (boy/girlfriends) are strictly Haram (forbidden) in Islam. For non permissible males to have a relationship with non permissible females is one of the major sins in today's era.

Unfortunately we see this western influence spreading like an illness amongst the Muslim youth. As barriers of work and study have been relaxed by parents, as they would like to see their children prosper, it has brought its evils with it.

In today's youth the most common of sins after missing prayers, disobeying parents, cheating and lying is harram relationships, freely mixing with opposite sex and pornography. All that starts from online media to the physical act of sins.

Allah Subhana Watala says:

"Tell them (O Muhammad): 'My Lord has only forbidden indecent acts, whether open or hidden [Quran 7:33]

Looking at the Opposite Sex either in pictures, movies or in real

Allah says in Noble Quran

"Tell believers to lower their gaze, and tell the believing women to lower their gaze." (24:30,31)

The Prophet (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) has said that the eye that looks at a woman (non Mahram) or vice versa with intent of lust or a relationship is the eye that commits fornication (zina). In a Hadith he says

"The fornication of the two eyes is an evil glance. The fornication of the two ears is the obscene talk. The fornication of the tongue and hand is the touch and grasp. And the fornication of the two feet is the steps taken towards evil. The heart desires and longs and the private parts abide with or does contrary to it". (Mishkat ul Masabih, Abu Dawood)

Looking at opposite gender with lust, either in pictures, images, at colleges or at work, watching pornography or other indecent acts either openly or in the privacy of the home or on the internet is also forbidden.

Allah Asks Us Not to Even Go Close to It

"Say to them (O Muhammad!) Édo not even draw near to things shameful–be they open or secret" [Noble Quran 6:151]

Allah has mentioned this instruction along with shirk and murder which means that Allah considered shameful things like pornography among the major sins.

Allah knows best. He knows His creation. He knows that we are weak. Therefore, He likes us to stay away from shameful things.

Those who Propagate Shameful things among the Believers

"Verily those who love that indecency should spread among the believers deserve a painful chastisement in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah knows, but you do not know." Quran 24:19

The words used in the verse (fahishatu) embrace all the various forms that might be used to spread shameful and lewd behavior though any means be it pictures, films, or internet.

Don't follow Satan

At several places in the Quran, God warns us not to follow the steps of Satan: "He will incite you for shameful things (fuhsha) and encourage you to do universally accepted wrong things (al-munkar) Quran 24:21

Pornographic pictures and movies are haram (prohibited). Muslims should not watch, sell or make such movies.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said:

'The eyes commit adultery, the tongue commits adultery, the hands commit adultery, the feet commit adultery and then the private parts confirm it or deny it." (Reported by Ahmad Ibn Hanbal)

watching pornographic movies, listening to such songs or singing them, using one's hands and feet for this purpose, all these are sins that are related to Zina and then the final act of Zina takes place through haram intercourse."

Logging in and browsing pornographic sites is forbidden because a Muslim is always commanded to lower his/her gaze, let alone give a loose rein to his/her eyes to look at the private parts of others.

Harram Relationships:

Islam does not allow any illicit relationship between a man and a woman. Allaah has established marriage as the legitimate means for satisfying sexual desire, and through marriage a man and woman form a family based on the laws of Allaah, and their children are legitimate. In Islam, there is no such thing as a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship. You are either married or you are not. To have a boyfriend or girlfriend, no matter the level of interaction and involvement, is completely haraam!

Contact between the sexes is one of the doors that lead to fitnah (temptation). Sharee'ah is filled with evidence which indicates that it is essential to beware of falling into the traps of the shaytaan in this matter. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw a young man merely looking at a young woman, he turned his head so as to make him look away, then he said:

"I saw a young man and a young woman, and I did not trust the shaytaan not to tempt them." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (885) and classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

This does not mean that it is haraam for a man or woman to like a specific person whom he or she chooses to be a spouse, and feel love for that person and want to marry them if possible. Love has to do with the heart, and it may appear in a person's heart for reasons known or unknown. But if it is because of mixing or looking or haraam conversations, then it is also haraam. If it is because of previous acquaintance, being related or because of hearing about that person, and one cannot ward it off, then there is nothing wrong with that love, so long as one adheres to the sacred limits set by Allaah.

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

A person may hear that a woman is of good character and virtuous and knowledgeable, so he may want to marry her. Or a woman may hear that a man is of good character and virtuous and knowledgeable and religiously committed, so she may want to marry him. But contact between the two who admire one another in ways that are not Islamically acceptable is the problem, which leads to disastrous consequences. In this case it is not permissible for the man to get in touch with the woman or for the woman to get in touch with the man, and say that he wants to marry her. Rather he should tell her wali (guardian) that he wants to marry her, or she should tell her wali that she wants to marry him, as 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) did when he offered his daughter Hafsah in marriage to Abu Bakr and 'Uthmaan (may Allaah be pleased with them both). But if the woman contacts the man directly or if the man contacts woman directly, this is may leads to fitnah (temptation).

Liqaa'aat al-Baab il-Maftooh

The permissible ways to get the one whom you loves are sufficient i.e contact the wali or the gaurdian of the person whom you desire to marry, there is no need for haraam means, but we make it hard for ourselves and the shaytaan takes advantage of that.

Beware of Satan Stay away from Fitnah

Shaytan makes this sin seem attractive and beautitufl to you, but in fact it's a great sin that is the doorway to Zina (fornication) and the anger and punishment of Allah.Allah Azza wa Jal says:

"O you who believe! Follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan). And whosoever follows the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan), then, verily, he commands Al-Fahsha' [i.e. to commit indecency (illegal sexual intercourse)], and Al-Munkar [disbelief and polytheism (i.e. to do evil and wicked deeds; and to speak or to do what is forbidden in Islam)]. And had it not been for the Grace of Allaah and His Mercy on you, not one of you would ever have been pure from sins. But Allaah purifies (guides to Islam) whom He wills, and Allaah is All-Hearer, All-Knower" [al-Noor 24:21]

Prophet Muhmmad Peace be upon him said:

"I have not left behind any fitnah (temptation) more harmful to men than women." [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5096; Muslim, 2740]

This hadith doesn't mean woman it self is a fitnah, rather it says the temptations, the lust and the harram love for woman is the greatest fear of falling in sin for the Ummah.

Freely mixing with man and woman always ends up in Fitnah.

O Muslimah guard your modesty and chastity

That's why Islam orders woman to cover up herself and guard her modesty for being protected by molestation, Hijab is nothing but a symbol of piety and chastity, It's a dress that cover up female's body including her hairs (Hijab) and face also (Niqab).

"O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed…" (Qur'an 33:59)

"And do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance…" [al-Ahzaab:32]

"And not to show off their adornment" [al-Noor 24:31]

Thus Displaying of beauty in any way is discouraged and forbidden by Allah Subhana Wa'taala!

O' Muslim lower your gaze

Allah Subhan Wa'tala says:

"Tell the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make far greater purity for them; And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And tell the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty." (Quran 24:30-31).

Seek Refuge of Allah from satan the curse one! May Allah protect us from evil and evil deeds. Ameen

10 Things You Didn't Know You Could Do With Google

Google is amazing (please thank me for this amazing revelation). There are some things you probably didn't know Google can do. Take your time and read the information below. You'll likely learn a few tips and tricks that

will make you appreciate Google even more.

10. Find a beautiful wallpaper for your desktop resolution with Google images

Here's how you do it:

  1. Go to Advanced Image Search
  2. Next to "Exact size" click on "Use my desktop resolution". Then, next to "Content types" select "Photo content."
  3. Enter some words. If you want to find cows, enter beautiful cows . Let's see the results:

google found backgrounds 486x400

Notice that many of the images in the results are from wallpaper sites. Google Images makes it very convenient to go through these types of sites and browse them like a gallery instead of going to each gallery site separately.

9. Create unlimited disposable email addresses with Gmail

Take the following example:

gmail addresses 532x400
That's right, you can add one or more dots ANYWHERE between your username and send

messages to that 'new' email. All of those messages will arrive to your old (without dots) email.

Hard to explain without a picture. But somehow Google did find a way to do it…

Sometimes you may receive a message sent to an address that looks like yours but has a different number or arrangement of periods. While we know it might be unnerving if you think someone else's mail is being routed to your account, don't worry: both of these addresses are yours.

Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters within usernames, you can add or remove the dots from a Gmail address without changing the actual destination address; they'll all go to your inbox, and only yours. In short:

All these addresses belong to the same person. You can see this if you try to sign in with your username, but adding or removing a dot from it. You'll still go to your account.

Yep, this is an explanation from Google itself. Now that you understand this, let's keep going.

8. Search videos durations using Google Video

I've noticed there's not a single video site that allows you to search videos by duration. Let's say I want to learn Spanish and I want comprehensive videos for that (longer than 20 minutes.) To search, I go to Google Advanced Video Search page and select "Long" next to "Duration". Here's what happens:

google video duration 560x346

Now all that's left is to get some free time and watch those…

7. Want to find an iPad alternative using Google Search?

Sure, you can write 'iPad alternative' in Google but that won't give you the best results. Instead, try this:

better than google searchUsing "better than product" where product=any product will give you not only alternatives but better alternatives to a particular product. Very cool.

6. Detect any unknown language with Google Language Detector

I have a big problem:

what language is this 560x99

What's the solution? Google language detector.

google language detect

Another good way to detect and also translate is to use Google Translate and the "Detect Language" option:

google translate 560x228

5. See what the Dutch haven been searching for recently using Google Insights

Google is the most popular search engine in almost any country in the world. Google Insights (like the name suggests) gives you 'insights' of what people have been searching for around the world. For example, Netherlands:

google insights

Hyves is a Dutch portal and social network. Weer seems to be a weather portal.

4. When did Google become more popular than Microsoft? Google Trends has the answer

google trends 560x364

Google Trends helps you discover the trends on various topics and see what people have been searching for over time. In this case, you can see when people started searching for Google more than Microsoft in early 2005.

3. Hate opening PDF files? Google Docs is the solution

So you've been searching on Google for a particular topic and found a PDF file:

google pdf quick view 560x372

Instead of opening the file in Adobe Reader (which is a painful process), you can click on "Quick View" and open the file in Google Docs! It takes seconds to open and it's way more flexible. If you choose later, you can always save the file as PDF by choosing the export option in Google Docs.

2. Scan and Read your RSS feeds like email messages in Google Reader

You probably know how easy it is to open and read email messages in Gmail thanks to the list view. Well, you can do the same in Google Reader:

google reader 560x310

The default view in Google Reader is 'expanded' which makes the items pretty difficult to scan and read. If you change the view from expanded to 'list', then it becomes WAY easier to SCAN items and pick what you like.

1. Google can tell you the answer to life and the universe

googles answer to life 560x106

Mother's Status In Islam..

All praise is for Allaah and peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

After Allaah and His Messenger, the most beloved and respected person to any Muslim should be his Mother.

Allaah has given the mother such status that Rasulullaah SAW says: (mafhum) "Paradise lies under the feet of mothers."

Obedience and respect towards your mother is a very important duty in Islam and is similar to performing Salat and keeping fast. To hurt your mother in any way is the second biggest sin and those who commit this evil sin will be harshly punished by Allaah in the Hereafter or maybe even in this world.

WHY?

Your mother is not a Prophet, nor is she an angel. She is just a human being like you. So why has Allaah ordered you to be obedient towards your mother, and why does your mother have such a high status in Islam?

Allaah loves and cares for us more than anybody else, and he especially loves those people who love and care for others. Similarly, Allaah's Wrath fall upon those people who hurt other people in any way? Allaah the All-Knowing knows that in this world nobody is more loving and caring towards another person than the way that a mother is towards her child. Only Allaah and Rasulullaah SAW love you more than your mother!

Only Allaah knows what your mother does for you. Allaah sees your mother feeling pain whilst she tries to give you whatever you want. Allaah sees your mother’s love and kindness. Pleased by your mother's actions, Allaah has given her a very high status and many virtues and rewards. Allaah also sees that many of us are not thankful to our mothers. Allaah sees many of us being disobedient towards our mothers.

Therefore, Allaah has ordered us to be good towards our mothers. Allaah has not advised us; but Allaah has ordered us! We have no choice; therefore we have to be good towards our mothers.

To encourage us to do this, Allaah has promised Paradise for those of us who are obedient towards our mothers.

At the same time, Allaah has threatened to severely punish those of us who do not listen to our mothers, or hurt them in any way.

But what does your mother do for you?
She only cooks and cleans?
What - just that???
So why do you need to be thankful to your Mother?
Apart from Allaah, nobody knows what our mother really does for us.

TEN REASONS FOR BEING THANKFUL TO YOUR MOTHER:

1. Your mother carried you in her womb for nine months bearing pain upon pain.
2. During this time, she could not eat nor sleep - because of you.
3. When you were a baby, and then a child, she spent every minute of her life looking after you.
4. She only slept when you slept. She only ate after you had eaten.
5. She was patient and loved you even when you cried all night; when you cried all day.
6. She taught you how to walk; how to speak; how to eat; how to live.
7. When you fall ill, she looks after you.
8. She always cooks and prepares food for you..
9. She buys you the things you ask for.
10. She will always love you, no matter what you do.

These are just a few things that our mothers do for us. They do so much more; more things we do not know about. And one thing that your Mother does for you, that nobody else in the world does, is that she worries about you from the bottom of her heart.

SO WHAT ARE THE THINGS SHE WORRIES ABOUT?
1. She worries about your food.
2. She worries about your clothes.
3. She worries about your health.
4. She worries about your education.
5. She worries about your future.
6. She worries about your whole life.

Allaah has ordered us, in various places of the Holy Qur'aan, to be good to our mothers. Allaah has told us to look after them even more when they are old and weak. Allaah has taught us to be gentle to our mothers and speak to them in a nice manner.

Allaah has also told us to supplicate to Him for our mothers with this prayer: "Rabbir-Hamhuma Kama Rabbayani Sagheerah." ("My Lord - have Mercy upon my parents; the way they had Mercy upon me when I was young.")

The Prophet Muhammad SAW has also ordered us to be good to our mothers. The Prophet SAW has told us about the great rewards for that person who is good to his mother. He (SAW) has described the mother as being a 'Door of Paradise'.

Rasulullaah SAW has also warned us of severe punishments for that person who is disobedient to his mother.

TEN EASY WAYS TO ENTER PARADISE
1. Listen to your mother.
2. Help your mother.
3. Smile at your mother.
4. Be thankful to your mother for whatever she does for you.
5. Spend time with your mother.
6. Always ask your mother if you can help her with anything.
7. Buy your mother gifts.
8. Be good to your mother's family and friends.
9. Lead a good and exemplary life so that your mother is happy.
10. Always make du'a for your mother, especially after every Salat.

THOSE WHO ARE DISOBEDIENT TO THEIR MOTHER WILL BURN IN THE FIRE OF JAHANNAM (HELL FIRE)

However hard we try, we can never repay our mothers for what they have done for us; but we can at least do as much as we can, and also ask Allaah to repay them for us. Our mothers are indeed a great blessing from Allaah. We should greatly appreciate and value this blessing. Whilst our mothers are alive, we have a golden opportunity to guarantee ourselves Paradise and also success in this world.
We will only truly realize the value and status of our mothers when they are no longer with us.

May Allah Give us Strength to be obedient to our mothers.

This article dedicated to my Dearest Mom - I love u mom....muaaahhhh :)

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IN FOLLOWING SITUATIONS -2

In the name of Allaah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate

"May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon You"

Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Bismillaah Walhamdulillaah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillaah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullaahi Wa-Barakaatuhu

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

IN THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS

English Translation

Book by Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

(part 8)

Being informed of the correct direction of the qiblah whilst praying

If there is a congregation praying, and during their prayer they are informed that the qiblah is in a direction other than that which they were facing, they should all turn towards the correct direction. The same is also true for someone praying individually. Whatever part of their prayer has been performed (before changing direction) will be correct.

The evidence for this is a narration reported by Imaam Muslim from Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him): "While the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was praying towards Bayt-al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), the aayah was revealed to him (interpretation of the meaning): Verily! We have seen the turning of your face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a qiblah that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of al-Masjid al-Haram.[Al-Baqarah 2:144].

A man from Bani Salamah was passing by and found them (i.e., the people of Bani Salamah) in the state of rukoo in the second rakah of the Fajr prayer. He called out to them: The qiblah has been changed, so they changed direction while they were still in rukoo." (Saheeh Muslim, No. 527)

If someone does not know the direction of the qiblah, he must ask someone if he can, or else he should make ijtihaad (make a judgment to the best of his ability based on the information available) if he is able to, otherwise he must follow someone who is reliable. If he cannot find such a person, then he should fear Allaah, do his best and pray, and his prayer is valid.

Falling behind when praying in congregation

If a person is praying in a congregation and the loudspeaker stops working or he becomes drowsy and he lags behind the imaam by one or more obligatory acts (arkaan) of prayer (i.e., the imaam performed it and he did not because of not hearing the imaams voice), then when he wakes up again or the sound of the speaker comes back, he should complete the obligatory acts that he has missed, then continue following the imaam.

This problem may arise in many cases. For example: the imaam recites a verse that contains the word of prostration (sajdah) and some of the people misunderstand it to be a verse of prostration while in reality it is not, so when the imaam says takbeer for rukoo at the end of the verse and performs rukoo, some of the followers (especially those towards the rear of the congregation) take it to be the takbeer for the prostration of recital, so they prostrate. When the imaam stands up from the rukoo saying "sami-Allaahu li man hamidah", they stand up from their prostration, thus having missed the act of rukoo and standing up from it. So it is incumbent on them to complete what they missed and then catch up with the imaam. This is because they did not do it intentionally. However, in the case of one who intentionally lags behind the imaam (e.g., someone who prolongs his prostration to make a long supplication such that he misses the obligatory act which comes after the prostration), the majority of scholars say that the prayer of someone who misses two consecutive obligatory acts of prayer without a valid excuse, is void and he is a sinner. (Kashshaaf al-Qinaa, 1/467; al-Mawsooah al-Fiqhiyyah, 6/29).

However, the principle is that the imaam must be followed, as the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The imaam is there to be followed, so do not differ from him. When he goes into rukoo, make rukoo. When he says "Sami-Allaahu li man hamidah" (Allaah hears the one who praises Him), say "Rabbanaa lakal-hamd" (O our Lord! To You belongs the Praise). When he goes into sajdah, make sajdah. If he prays sitting, then all should pray sitting." (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, no. 689)

When the imaam nullifies his wudoo

If the Imaam nullifies his wudoo whilst he is praying, or remembers during the prayer that he did not perform ablution, then he should come out from prayer and appoint someone to finish leading the prayer, as was narrated from Umar, Ali, Alqamah and Ataa. If he does not appoint anyone, and the people pray individually, this is also acceptable, and this is the opinion taken by Imaam Al-Shaafii .If he brings someone forward to lead them, that is also permitted.

The evidence for this is what has been narrated regarding Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) when he was stabbed: he took the hand of Abd al-Rahmaan bin Awf and made him step forward, and he led the prayer to completion. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath, 7/60).

The reason for this deduction is that Umar did this in the presence of a number of Companions and others and no one opposed this act, so it became a consensus (ijmaa). (Ahkaam al-Imaamah, al-Muneef, p. 234).

If the imaam remembers that he is not in a state of purity, he should indicate to the people to remain as they are and go and purify himself, then come back, say "Allaahu akbar" and lead them in prayer. This is valid. The evidence for this is the report narrated byAbu Dawood from Abu Bakrah: "The Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) started to lead the fajr prayer, then he indicated to the people that they should stay in their places. Then he came back and water was dripping from his head." (Sunan Abi Dawood, no. 233; Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, 1/45.

Abu Dawood included a chapter entitled Fil-Junub yusalli bil-qawmi wa huwa naasin (One who inadvertently leads the people in prayer when in a state of janaabah)).

Commenting on this hadeeth, Imaam Al-Khattaabi said: "In this hadeeth there is evidence that if one is leading the people in prayer while in a state of janaabah and the people do not know of it, then their prayer is unaffected and there is no need for them to repeat it. But the Imaam has to repeat his prayer." (Sunan Abi Dawood wa maahu Maaalim al-Sunan by al-Khattaabi, edited by al-Daaas, 1/159.)

When the imaams awrah becomes uncovered

If someone is praying in congregation behind the imaam and sees his awrah (those parts of the body that must be covered) uncovered due to an opening in his clothes or due to his clothes being thin and transparent, then if it is possible he should go ahead and cover it with something, otherwise he should come out of his prayer and inform the imaam by saying "cover your awrah" (in Arabic "ghattil-awrah"), or "protect what has been uncovered".

He should not stay quiet and continue to pray because it is known that the imaams prayer (in this condition) is incorrect and following him is incorrect as well. (From the oral fataawa of Shaykh Abd al-Azeez ibn Baaz).

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IN FOLLOWING SITUATIONS...

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

IN THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS

English Translation

Book by Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

(part 7)

Not hastening unduly to join a prayer in progress

If the prayer starts and a person is still on his way to the mosque, he should not hasten unduly; he should walk with calmness and dignity, as indicated in the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him): "The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: If the prayer starts, do not approach it running; approach it walking with calmness and dignity. Whatever you catch up with, pray, and whatever you miss, complete it [afterwards].'" (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath, 2/390).

Breaking wind during a congregational prayer

If a man breaks wind during a congregational prayer, what should he do in this embarrassing situation?

He should put his hand over his nose, and go out. The evidence for this was reported by Aaishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who said: "The Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: If one of you passes wind whilst he is praying, he should hold his nose and leave.'" (Sunan Abi Dawood, 1114; see also Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, 985).

Al-Teebi said: "The command to hold ones nose is to make it appear as though one is bleeding. This is not lying; it is a form of action that is allowed so that Shaytaan will not convince a person in this situation not to leave because he feels too shy of others." (Mirqaat al-Mafaateeh Sharh Mishkaat al-Masaabeeh, 3/18).

This is an example of the kind of ambiguity that is allowed and approved of, in order to avoid embarrassment, as whoever sees him leaving in this manner will assume that he is suffering a nosebleed. Another benefit of this Prophetic advice is that it puts a stop to the insinuating whispers of the Shaytaan, which may otherwise cause him to stay in the row or continue praying with the congregation when he has passed wind, and this does not please Allaah. How can he stay when the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has commanded him to leave?

In this case he is permitted either to pass through the rows, or to walk to the edge of the mosque, in order to leave, so that he can go and make wudoo' then come back and rejoin the prayer.

When one has already prayed and comes to another mosque to find the people there praying

If a person has already prayed in one mosque, then he comes to another mosque for a lesson or for some other reason, and finds the people there praying, then he should join them and his prayer would be considered a naafil (supererogatory or "extra") prayer. He should do so even if it is during the prohibited times of prayer because there is a reason behind it.

The evidence for this comes from the hadeeth of Yazeed ibn al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him): "I performed Hajj with the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and prayed Fajr with him in Masjid Al-Khayf. When he completed his prayer and turned around, he found two people at the back who did not pray with him. He said, I have to talk to them. So he came to them, and they were trembling. He asked them: What prevented you two from praying with us?

They said: O Messenger of Allaah(saws)! We had already prayed in our places.

Hesaid: Do not do that. If you have already prayed at your places and then came to a congregational mosque, pray with them too and it will become a supererogatory prayer for you.'" (Sunan Al-Tirmidhi, no. 219; Saheeh al-Jaami, 667)
