Gheebah: A Disgusting Sin...

In the name of Allaah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate

"May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon You"

Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Now what does Gheebah mean?

Gheebah comes from the root: Gha-Yaa-Baa, meaning that which is unseen.
In Arabic, backbiting, slandering, or any misuse of the tongue is Gheebah.
Gheebah is to talk about your brother or sister in such a manner that he or she would dislike it if told to on their face. Gheebah is one of the major sins in Islam because it hurts others and destroys their self-esteem.
In the following you can see that the prophet (s.a.w.s) has clearly defined Gheebah (backbiting) for us, so that we can identify and keep away from this terrible sin.

Abu Huraira (r.a.) narrated that the Prophet (s.a.w.s) said, â€œDo you know what is backbiting?â€ They (the companions) said: “Allaah and His Messenger (saws) know best. Thereupon he (the Prophet) (saws) said: “Backbiting implies your talking about your brother in a manner which he does not like.â€ It was said to him: “What if what I say about my brother is true?â€ He said: “If what you said about him is true then you would have backbitten him, and if it is not true, then he is slandered (buhtaan)
[Reported in Saheeh Muslim: hadeeth 1183, Sahih Muslim: Book 31, Number 6265, Abu Dawud, Ahmad, Tirmidhi, others...]

and in Another Hadith Al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah said, "The Messenger of Allaah (saws) said, Gheebah (gossip, backbiting) means that a man mentions about a person something which is true, behind his back."
[Al_Suyuti, Zawaid Al Jami from the report of al Khara'iti in Masawi Al Akhlaq. Malik reported something similar with a Mursal Isnad as mentioned in Al-Sahihah, No. 1992]
 .

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Muminin: I said to the Prophet (s.a.w.s): It is enough for you in Safiyyah that she is such and such (the other version than Musaddads has:) meaning that she was short-statured. He replied; You have said a word which would change the sea if it were mixed in it...
[Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 41, Number 4857]

We all indulge in Gheebah without realizing it but, we tend to realize how painful and horrible it is only when we become victim (the one who is back bitten) to it.

Before I started researching about Gheebah, I was very careless about this sin, many times to the point of not being bothered or not caring to attempt to keep away from it. But I realized the dreadful part only when someone spoke about me. I realized the feeling of the people who I spoke of must have endured.

Therefore we should remember that when we commit Gheebah we sacrifice the honor of our brothers and sisters.
I go further with the point of Gheebah being wrong by pointing out what Allaah says in the Holy Qur'aan.

“O, you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear God, verily, God is the one who accepts repentance, Most Merciful.
( Surah Al Hujurat 49: 12)

Surah Humazah in the Holy Qur'aan, describes clearly that, one who indulges in Gheebah is in clear error and in great loss.

1. Woe to every slanderer and backbiter.
2. Who has gathered wealth and counted it,
3. He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever!
4. Nay! Verily, he will be thrown into the crushing Fire.
5. And what will make you know what the crushing Fire is?
6. The fire of AllÃah, kindled,
7. Which leaps up over the hearts,
8. Verily, it shall be closed in on them,
9. In pillars stretched forth (i.e. they will be punished in the Fire with pillars, etc.).

These verses tell us about the terrible punishment, that befall on the Muslim who commits Gheebah.

An Islamic speaker once said, â€œEven in our thought, one should honor his brother or sister in Islam €. It is obvious that we as Muslim should be loving and compassionate with one another.
Gheebah is a disgusting sin, definitely one of the biggest, and evilest wreckers of this compassion, love and brotherhood.
What we also fail to realize is that Gheebah will wash away our good deeds and our good deeds would be snatched from us and given to one who we spoke ill off on the Day of Judgement.

The prophet (saws) said:
We will have survived all of the horrible trials, the judgement, the bridge, and the huge thorns which snatch us according to our deeds and throw us into Hell.
(Sahih Bukhari: Volume 8, Book 76, Number 577).

We will have been through all this, only to lose all our good deeds because we could not or would not control our tongue.

This boneless flesh called  tongue € is playing games and showing its stunt. It is not funny… We might be so lenient to this but in the sight of Allaah it is one of the most hated thing.

The Prophet (saws) says that Allaah is the Judge of Judges and that no one can judge anyone as Allaah does. If one is judgmental, he is making himself into a judge with no authority from the Judge of Judges. When one says: "So-and-so is a no-good person," we should remember that we are not the judge of our Lords servants; He created them and He judges them as He wills! We should remember, whoever ignores this point is competing with Allaah and taking his attribute of Al Haakem (The Judge) and setting himself as partner against Allaah. What a grave mistake!

Allaah teaches us to speak out against Slander and try to put a stop to it in the following verse:
And why did you not, when you heard it, say? "It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to Allaah, this is a most serious slander" (Surah An Nur 24:16)

Gheebah is indeed a disgusting sin worse than Zina (fornication). It can be done so easily, any moment, any time, whereas Zina is a sin were one cannot engage as easily as Gheebah.

However, we should also understand that under some circumstances a person is allowed to talk about his brother or sisters.

The following are the only circumstances where one is allowed to talk about his brother or sister in islam

1. If the person is being oppressed. In this case you are allowed to talk about the person who oppresses so that the oppressed may take what is rightfully his. He should only talk out of necessity and only to the one who can assist the oppressed person in taking his right from the oppressor.

2. Requesting a fatwa (Islamic ruling). For example, you may say "my brother did such and such (recalling the event), what do I do?" It is permitted to recall the incident and not mentioning the name of the person (this is better) so that a fatwa may be obtained.

3. When seeking marriage, setting up a business or being a witness. If a man asked another about a third person who has proposed it is permitted for the one being asked to say what he knows about the one who has proposed. When talking about him (the one seeking marriage) the one who knows him should be honest about what he says, without diminishing the persons value nor exaggerating his faults.

4. Cautioning people about bad/evil-doers. If a person propagates forbidden or evil, or something which contains shirk, it is permitted to warn people about that person until they are convinced about the misleading information.

5. If a person openly commits evil or follows bidah, such as drinking alcohol and seizing peoples wealth unlawfully, it is permissible to speak of what he is doing openly, but it is not permissible to speak against him any other way, unless it is for another reason.

6. For identification, if someone is known by a nickname such as the dim-sighted one, or the blind man or the one-eyed or the lame one, it is permissible to identify him as such, but it is haraam to mention that by way of belittling him, and if it is possible to identify him in some other way, that is better.

These are few circumstances under which backbiting (which sole intent is to provide TRUE information only by God fearing souls) is permitted and has certain conditions which should be fulfilled. Purity of intention to Allaah (swt). He should not talk about the faults of a man (who has proposed to a woman) because of envy or dislike. It is a responsibility and a trust which Allaah has ordered.

Lastly, after knowing what backbiting is, knowing its dangers and the severity of the sin we should repent to Allaah for those actions before there is no chance left. We should constantly remind ourselves that when Judgment Day comes, the one who has backbitten shall have his good deeds taken away from him and given to the one whom he has harmed by backbiting. If his good deeds have been exhausted, the other persons (the one who was harmed) bad deeds will be taken and given to the one who backbit. The one who indulged in Gheebah will be dragged by the face and taken to the fire.

All of our organs-; tongue, heart, mind, etc- will be a witness against us, we should repent before the Day comes when we will regret what we have done. Perfect repentance is to regret the action we have committed against our Muslim brother, and to stay away from it in future. We should commit ourselves not to ever return to that action. If we remember those whom we have backbitten before knowing the reality of these and the severity of the punishment for the one who indulges in this sin then we should supplicate for that person( who we back bitten) in their absence.

Reasons why people fall into the sin of backbiting others

1. Weakness of faith and impiety make a person likely to speak thoughtlessly and carelessly and transgress against others when he speaks.

When Aishah was accused of impropriety, her co-wife Zaynab bint Jahsh was asked about her. Zaynab said: O Messenger of Allaah(saws)! I safeguard my hearing and my sight. I know nothing but good.â€

Aishah later commented: She was my rival among the wives of Allaahs Messenger (peace be upon him). Allaah restrained her by way of her piety. [Sahi al-Bukhari (2661)]

2. Another reason that people participate in backbiting is on account of the company they keep. They backbite people to please their peers and acquaintances. Allaah says, conveying to us the words of the denizens of Hell: We used to speak in vain with those who speak in vain.â€ [Sirah al-Mudaththir: 45]

3. Another reason is hatred, enmity, and envy towards others. Ibn Taymiyah says: Some people are inspired by envy to backbite, and in doing so, combine between two ignoble traits: backbiting and envy.â€

4. Love of the world and the pursuit of status and power make people backbite others. Fudayl b. Iyad said: No one has ever loved leadership without envying, transgressing, tracking down the faults of others, and loathing to hear anyone else mentioned in a good way.

How to rid ourselves of this ignoble trait

1. We can protect ourselves from speaking ill of others by cultivating our fear of Allaah and our sense of shame before of our Lord. This can be achieved by reflecting often upon the verses of the Qura'an and the hadith of our Prophet (peace be upon him) that speak about Allaahs punishment, that encourage us to repent, and that warn us against evil deeds.

Allaah says: Or do they think that We do not hear their secrets and their private counsels? Indeed we do and our messengers are by them to record.â€ [Surah al-Zukhruf: 80]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Feel shame before Allaah as you ought to feel shame before him. So guard the head and what it contains, guard the stomach and what you put in it, and think upon death and returning to dust.â€ [Sunan al-Tirmidhi (2458)]

2. We can reflect upon just how much we lose every time we utter some bad words about another person.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) once asked his Companions: Do you know who is bankrupt?â€

They replied: The person among us who is bankrupt is the one who possesses neither money nor provision.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The one who is bankrupt from among my followers is he who comes on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, charity, and fasting to his credit. However, he had insulted this person, struck that person, and seized the wealth of another, on account of which his good deeds will be taken from him. Then, if his good deeds are exhausted, the sins of those whom he wronged will be taken from them and foisted upon him and then he will be cast into the Fire.â€ [Sahih Muslim (2581)]

3. A beneficial remedy that can help us to rid ourselves of this evil habit is to reflect upon our own shortcomings and work to improve ourselves. If we preoccupy ourselves with our own faults, we will not find time to worry about the faults of others. We should fear that if we speak about someone else's shortcomings, that Allaah might punish us by afflicting us with the same.

Al-Hasan al-Basri said: We used to remind one another that whoever faults his brother on account of a sin and he had repented for it will be punished by Allaah by falling into it himself.â€

Abu Hurayrah said:One of you sees the dust in his brothers eye but fails to see the crud in his own.

4. Keeping to the company of righteous people and avoiding bad company helps us to avoid backbiting.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The likeness of a good companion and a bad companion is that of a person carrying musk and another who works the bellows. The person carrying musk might give you some of it or at the very least you will enjoy the pleasant scent. The person with the bellows will either singe your clothing or at least make you suffer from the bad smell.â€[Sahih al-Bukhari (2101) and Sahih Muslim (2628) and the wording is that of Muslim]

Al-Nawawi writes, commenting on this hadith: It discusses the virtues of keeping the company of the righteous and people who carry out good works and possess good manners¦ It prohibits us from the company of people who engage in bad deeds and innovations, those who backbite others, and those who are habitually sinful and idle.â€

5. A person who has a habit of backbiting others needs to make a firm and determined resolution to stop.

We can look at the example of Rasul b. Wahb who said: I swore an oath that for every time I backbite someone, I would fast a day. This just wore me out, since I would backbite and fast. Then I resolved that for every time I backbite someone, I would spend one silver coin in charity. Then, for the love of money, I gave up backbiting.

Muslims Are Their Own Worst Enemy

Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

This is not a religious article per se, but on reading this matter, one can appreciate that today Muslims are failing, not least because they are deficient in Eeman. They get fragmented, for purely selfish reasons, with the net result that others take advantage of them and expose them as weak people. You will appreciate this point on reading the last few paragraphs of this article.

We need to better our Eeman if we wish to succeed, both in this world and in the hereafter. It is a matter of shame that the vulnerability of Muslims is talked about by non-Muslims with glee, as the author of the article below clearly illustrates. We are making ourselves into a laughingstock in the eyes of the world, and are providing fodder for the anti-Muslim media which speaks badly (that's putting it mildly) of us in the way we conduct our lives.

Please circulate this to all possible in the hope that many of our Muslim brothers may wake up to what is happening and take some concrete steps to start the process of pulling up our socks to better our lot in the long run.

Wassalam. Adam.

Muslims Are Their Own Worst Enemy</ >

Muslims are numerous but powerless. Divisions among Muslims, especially between Sunni and Shi'ites, have consigned the Muslim Middle East to almost a century of Western control. Muslims cannot even play together. The Islamic Solidarity Games, a regional version of the Olympics, which were to be held in April in Iran , have been cancelled because the Iranians and the Arabs cannot agree on whether to call the body of water that separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula the Persian Gulf or the Arabian Gulf .

Muslim disunity has made it possible for Israel to dispossess the Palestinians, for the U.S. to invade Iraq , and for the U.S. to rule much of the region through puppets. For example, in exchange for faithful service, Egypt receives $1.5 billion a year from Washington , which enables President Mubarak to buy off opposition. The opposition had rather have the money than support the Palestinians. Therefore, Egypt cooperates with Israel and the U.S. in the blockade of Gaza .

Another factor is the willingness of some Muslims to betray their own kind for U.S. dollars. Don't take my word for it. Listen to neoconservative Kenneth Timmerman, head of the Foundation for Democracy, which describes itself as "a private, non-profit organization established in 1995 with grants from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to promote democracy and internationally-recognized standards of human rights in Iran ."

By now we all know what that means. It means that the U.S. finances a "velvet" or some "color revolution" in order to install a U.S. puppet. Just prior to the sudden appearance of a "green revolution" in Tehran primed to protest an election, Timmerman wrote that

"the National Endowment for Democracy has spent millions of dollars during the past decade promoting 'color' revolutions in places such as Ukraine and Serbia , training political workers in modern communications and organizational techniques. Some of that money appears to have made it into the hands of pro-Mousavi groups, who have ties to non-governmental organizations outside Iran that the National Endowment for Democracy funds."

So, according to the neocon Timmerman, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, it was U.S. money that funded Mousavi's claims that Ahmadinejad stole the last Iranian election.

During President George W. Bush's regime, it became public knowledge that American money is used to purchase Iranians to work against their own country. The Washington Post, a newspaper sympathetic to the neocon goal of American hegemony and war with Iran , reported in 2007 that Bush authorized spending more than $400 million for activities that included "supporting rebel groups opposed to the country's ruling clerics."

This makes the U.S. government a "state sponsor of terrorism." For confirmation, one of the U.S. paid operatives, who conducted terror operations in Iran , has ratted on his terrorist supporters in Washington . Abdulmalek Rigi, leader of the Baloch separatist group responsible for several attacks, was recently arrested by the Iranians. Rigi admitted that the Americans in Washington assured him of unlimited military aid and funding for waging an insurgency against the Islamic Republic of Iran. (Read his confession here.)

Possibly Rigi was tortured into confession. It is the American way. If the "light of the world," the "indispensable people," and the "shining city on the hill" tortures people, perhaps the Iranians do as well. Rigi's younger brother, himself on death row in Iran, has said that the U.S. provided direct funding to the separatist group and even ordered specific terrorist attacks inside Iran (see Antiwar.com, Feb. 23, 2010 and also here and here.)

The U.S. and its NATO puppets have been killing Afghan women, children, and village elders since Oct. 7, 2001, when the U.S. military invasion "Operation Enduring Freedom," a proper Orwellian title for a self-serving war of aggression, was launched. The U.S. installed puppet president of Afghanistan , Hamid Karzai, is bought and paid for with U.S. dollars.

The money that Washington gives Karzai finances the corruption that supports him. Karzai's corruption and his treason against the Afghan people encourage the Taliban to keep fighting in order to achieve a government that serves Afghans instead of Washington , D.C. (Officials puzzle over millions of dollars leaving Afghanistan by plane for Dubai, by Andrew Higgins, Washington Post, February 25, 2010.

Without the puppet Karzai selling out Afghans to Washington, the U.S. would have already been driven out of the country. With Karzai paying Afghans with American money to fight Afghans for the Americans, the war drones on into its ninth year.

Feminists, liberals, and naive American flag-wavers will say that what is written here is utter rot, that Americans are in Afghanistan to bring women's rights and birth control to Afghan women and to bring freedom, democracy and progress to Afghanistan , even if it means leveling every village, town and house in the country. We, "the indispensable people," are only there to do good, because we care so much for the Afghan people who live in a country that most Americans can't find on a map.

While this collection of naïf's rants on about America "saving" Afghans from whatever, the White House and the Congress are conspiring against the American people to cut $500 billion dollars out of Medicare in order to give the money to private insurance companies. Jobless benefits are about to run out for millions of Americans, whose jobs have been moved offshore in order to make the rich richer. The U.S. Senate failed on Friday, Feb. 26, to extend jobless benefits. A single Republican Senator, Jim Bunning of Kentucky , was able to block the bill because it would cost a measly $10 billion and "would add to the budget deficit."

The "fiscally responsible" Bunning supports blank checks for wars of aggression (war crimes under the Nuremberg standard), and payoffs to investment banks for wrecking the retirement plans of most Americans. Bunning sends the bills to the unorganized and unrepresented Americans, whose jobs have been stolen by corporate offshoring of jobs and whose retirements have been stolen by the endless greed of the Wall Street investment banks.

What fool believes that the U.S. government, which is totally indifferent to the fate of its own citizens, cares so much about Afghanistan that it will spend blood and treasure to bring "progress" and "women's rights" to a country half a world away, while it drives its own citizens into the ground?

At Washington 's behest, the government of Pakistan is conducting war against its own people, killing many and forcing others to flee their homes and lands. The Pakistani government's war against its own citizens has caused military expenses to soar, putting Pakistan 's budget deep in the red. Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin ordered the Pakistani government to raise taxes to pay for the war against its own people. (The puppet ruler, Asif Ali Zardari, complied with his American master's orders. Zardari declared a broad-based value added tax on virtually all goods and most services in Pakistan . Thus, Pakistanis are forced to finance a war against themselves.

The "cakewalk war" in Iraq has lasted 7 years instead of the promised 6 weeks, and the violence is still ongoing with Iraqis killed and maimed nearly every day. The reason Americans are still in Iraq is because the Iraqis hate each other more than they hate the American invader. The vast majority of the violence in "the Iraq war" was committed between Iraqi Sunnis and Iraqi Shi'ites as they cleansed one another from neighborhoods.

The majority Shi'ites regarded the American invasion of Iraq as an opportunity to gain power over the minority Sunnis, who ruled under Saddam Hussein. Therefore, the Shi'ites never engaged the American invading forces. The minority Sunnis (20 percent of the population) gave most of their effort to fighting the Shi'ite majority, but in their spare time a few thousand Sunnis were able to inflict serious losses on the American superpower.

Finally realizing the power of lucre in the Arab world, the Americans put 80,000 Sunnis on the U.S. military payroll and paid them to stop killing Americans.

This is how the U.S. won the war in Iraq . Iraqis sold out their independence for American dollars.

Considering that a few thousand Sunnis were able to prevent superpower America from successfully occupying Baghdad or much of Iraq, had the Shi'ites joined with the Sunnis against the invaders, the U.S. would have been defeated and driven out. This outcome was not possible, because the Shi'ites wanted to settle the score with the Sunnis, who had ruled them under Saddam Hussein.

This is the reason that Iraq today is in ruins, with one million dead, four million displaced or homeless, and the professional class having fled the country. Iraq , under the American puppet Maliki, is an American protectorate.

As long as Muslims hate and fear one another more than they hate their conquerors, they will remain a vanquished people.

Reminding all to keep Fast on 9th & 10th Muharram or 10th & 11th of Muharram.

Bismillaah Walhamdulillaah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillaah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullaahi Wa-Barakaatuhu
Reminding all to keep Fast on 9th & 10th Muharram

Taasooaa   = 9th   muharram
Aashooraa = 10th muharram
This is the day (10th muharram) when Prophet Moses (pbuh) and also Prophet Nooh (pbuh) used to fast. Also it is a confirmed sunnah that Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) also used to fast on this day.
Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet came to Medina , he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of Ashura (i.e. 10th of Muharram). They used to say: "This is a great day on which Allaah saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharaoh. Moses observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to Allaah."
The Prophet said, "I am closer to Moses than they." So, he observed the fast (on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it.
[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 55, Number 609]
"This is a righteous day" – in a report narrated by Muslim, [the Jews said:] "This is a great day, on which Allaah saved Moosa and his people, and drowned Pharaoh and his people."
"Moosa fasted on this day" – a report narrated by Muslim adds: "… in thanksgiving to Allaah, so we fast on this day."
According to a report narrated by al-Bukhaari"… so we fast on this day to venerate it."
A version narrated by Imaam Ahmad adds: "This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Joodi , so Nooh fasted this day in thanksgiving."
"and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day" – according to another report also narrated by al-Bukhaari: "He said to his Companions: 'You have more right to Moosa than they do, so fast on that day."
Why also to fast on 9th Muharram ?
Messenger of Allaah saw that, it is a day (10th muharram) which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem.
Thereupon the Messenger of Allaah (may peace be upon him) said:When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th But the Messenger of Allaah (may peace be upon him) died before the advent of the next year. [Sahih Muslim, Book 006, Number 2528]
                                     Virtues
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"…For fasting the day of 'Aashooraa, I hope that Allaah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before." [Sahih Muslim, Book 006, Number 2602].
This is from the bounty of Allaah towards us: for fasting one day He gives us expiation for the sins of a whole year. And Allaah is the Owner of Great Bounty.

THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUMUL AASHOORA

image001.jpg

(PLEASE READ AND FORWARD TO ALL)

The day of Aashoora is a significant day in the history of Islam as demonstrated by the Holy Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w.), whilst observing its significance let us shun all innovations and fabrications which deprive us of blessings and reward, let us cling firmly onto Quran and Sunnah and thus attain the success of both Dunia and Aakhirah.

AUTHENTIC ACTIONS AND BENEFITS

Fasting on the day of Aashoora (10th Muharram)

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said: "Observe the fast of Aashoora and oppose (the way of the Jews), fast a day before it also or a day after, meaning the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th (Sunan al-Kubra of Baihaqi vol.4 pg. 287) – (Talkheesul Habeer vol.2 pg 214)

Hazrath Ibne Abbas (R.A.) says: "I did not see the Messenger of Allah Ta'aala anxiously await the fast of any day, which he gave preference to over other days, but this day i.e. the day of Aashoora and this Month i.e. the Month of Ramadaan." (Sahih Bukhari vol. 1 pg 268)

The Prophet (s.a.w.) said: " The fast of Aashoora is a compensation for the sins of the past year. i.e. the sins of one year that has just gone by will be forgiven." (Sahih Muslim vol. 1 pg 368)

The Prophet (s.a.w.) said: "He who will be generous on his family on the day of Aashoora, Allah will be generous on him for the entire year."

(The above Hadith is transmitted by Tabrani, Baihaqi in his book "Ash-Shuab " and Fadaail-ul-Awqaat" having being narrated by Hazrath Ibne Masood (R.A)., Hafiz Suyuti in "Ad-Durar" (Shaami vol. 2 pg 155)

FABRICATIONS

The significance of Aashoora is attributed to many customs, occurrences and events, most of which are not proven from any authentic sources. Listed below are some examples of fabrications:

1.      The person who applies Surmah on the day of Aashoora will not have sore eyes for the entire year.

2.      The person who bathes on this day will not fall ill till the next year.

3.      Performing of two Rakaats of Salaah with specific Surahs and Dua's for attaining special virtues.

4.      Adam (a.s.) was forgiven on this day.

5.      Ebrahim (a.s.) was removed from the fire on this day.

6.      Ismaeel (a.s.) was saved from being sacrificed on this day.

7.      Yousuf (a.s.) was returned to Yacoob (a.s.) on this day.

8.      A special day to mourn the Martyrdom of Sayedena Husain (R.A.) (one must remember that the significance of Aashoora was from the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.) whilst Sayedena Husain (R.A.) was Martyred more than fifty years after the death of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)

ALLAH KNOWS BEST.

Benefiting the Dead- by Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips

Qur'aan established two general principles concerning the reward and punishment for deeds:

1) Each human will fundamentally only be benefited or harmed by the deeds which he or she actually did.

"...that humans will only have the result of their actions." [Soorah an-Najm (53):39]

2) No human can carry the sin of another.

"...that no one bearing sins can carry the sins of others." [Soorah an-Najm (53):38]

Consequently, when a person dies, the opportunity for that person to do good ends with the person's death.  However, the chance to harvest good from deeds which were done prior to death remains.

Du'aa

The prayers of other Muslims on behalf of the dead will benefit the dead, by the permission of God.  Had they done no good, no one would consider praying for them. If they were evil, the prayers of others will not benefit them.   In Ch-al-ashr (59):10, Allaah praises the believers who pray for those who have passed away before their time.

"And those who came after them say: Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not put in our hearts any hatred against the believers. Our Lord, You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful."

Furthermore, the funeral prayer itself consists mostly of prayers for the dead.

afwaan [the narrator mentioned that afwaan ibn `Abdillaah ibn afwaan was married to ad-Dardaa] said, "I visited Abud-Dardaa's home in Syria, but did not find him there. Ummud-Dardaa asked [me], 'Are you going to make Hajj this year?'  I said:  'Yes.'  She said, 'Pray to Allaah for good for us, for the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said,"The prayer of Muslim for his Muslim brother in his absence will be answered. As long as he prays for the good of his brother, there is an angel assigned near his head who says: Amen, and may the same be for you."' I left and went to the marketplace where I met Abud-Dardaa and he related from the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) the same as that." [Sahih Muslim, vol.4, p.1429, no.6590.]

Fasting

Fasts missed by dead persons may be done on their behalf by their close relatives. The fasts may be from Ramadaan or from oaths.

`Aa'ishah quoted Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) as saying,"Whoever died owing fasts, his guardian should fast on his behalf" [Sahih Al-Bukhari, vol. 3, p.99, no.173, and Sahih Muslim, vol. 2, p.556, no. 2553.]

Ibn 'Abbaas said:  A man came to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) and asked:  O Messenger of Allaah, my mother died owing one month of fasting.  Should I do it for her? He replied, "Yes, debts to Allaah, have more right to be paid." [Sahih Al-Bukhari, vol. 3, p. 99, no. 174, and Sahih Muslim, vol. 2, p. 556, no. 2554.]  In another narration a woman asked about her mother's debt of fasting and got the same reply. [Sahih Muslim, vol. 2, pp. 556-7, nos. 2554, 2557-61.]

Paying Financial Debts

Anyone may cover the debts of a dead person, whether they are relatives or not.  Furthermore, the payment of outstanding debts can benefit the dead by relieving them from some of the punishment due to them for their negligence in repaying them.

Jaabir said:  A man died and we washed him, perfumed him and shrouded him.  Then we brought him to Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) to lead the funeral prayer for him.  We asked, "Could you pray for him?"  He took a step forward then asked, "Does he have any outstanding debts?" We answered:  "Two deenaars." [He said, "Make the funeral prayer for your companion," and] [This addition can be found in another narration of the hadeeth] began to leave. Aboo Qataadah took responsibility for [paying] them, saying, "The two deenaars are my responsibility."   Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) asked,"Will the creditor be taken care of and will the dead person be absolved from them?" He replied, "Yes," so the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) led the funeral prayer for him. One day later he asked [Aboo Qataadah], "What was done about the two deenaars?" He replied, "He only died yesterday!"   The following day he returned to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) and said, "I have paid them off."  The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said, "Now his skin has become cool." [Musnad Ahmad, vol.3, p.330; authenticated in Ahkaamul-Janaa'iz, p. 16]

The Charity of Children

Parents will benefit from whatever righteous deeds their children do, without decreasing the reward of their children's good deeds.  A righteous child is considered to be part of the parent's earnings.

`Umaarah ibn `Umayr's aunt asked `Aa'ishah, "I have an orphan under my guardianship.  May I consume some of his wealth?" She replied that she had heard Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) say, "Among the most pleasant things a man consumes is what comes from his own earnings, and his child is from his earnings." [Sunan Abu Dawud, vol. 2, p. 1002, no.3521; authenticated in Saheeh Sunan Abee Daawood, vol. 2, p. 674, no. 3013]

`Aa'ishah related that a man asked the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam):  My mother died suddenly, and I think that if she had spoken [before dying], she would have given something in charity.  If I give charity on her behalf, will she get the reward?  He replied, "Yes." [Sahih Al-Bukhari, vol. 2, p.266, no.470,Sahih Muslim, vol. 3, p.866, no.4002, and Sunan Abu Dawud, vol. 2., p.812, no.2875]

Aboo Hurayrah quoted the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) as saying, "When a man dies, his acts come to an end, except in three cases: an ongoing charity, knowledge from which people continue to benefit, and a righteous child who prays for him." [Sahih Muslim, vol. 3, p.867, no. 4005, andSunan Abu Dawud, vol. 2, p.812, no.2874]

Dont Delay Your Repentance (TAWBAH)...

Repentance is ultimately the goal that we all seek. All sane people are conscious of their numerous sins, and those who believe in Allaah and His Messenger sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention) recognize that they will be held accountable for their sins, and therefore desire to be free of the evil consequences of their misdeeds.

Islam offers man the ideal way by which he may be released from the burden of his sins.

The word Tawbah (repentance) in Arabic literally means "to return". In an Islamic context, it refers to the act of leaving what Allaah has prohibited and returning to what He, Almighty, has commanded.

The subject of repentance is one that concerns all people who believe in Allaah, and is vital for the Muslims to understand because our salvation in the Hereafter depends on our repentance to Allaah, as Allaah commands (what means): "…And turn to Allaah in repentance, all of you, that you might succeed." [Qur'aan 24:31]

Allaah also Says (what means): "…Indeed, Allaah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves." [Qur'aan 2:222]

One may have a real intention to repent, but there may be some obstacles to the path of repentance. If this is the case, then he needs to act without hesitation and remove those obstacles to clear the way to a happy soul.

The postponement of repentance may be the result of either a deliberate desire to prolong the illicit pleasure derived from the sin, or doubt on the part of an ignorant sinner whether or not Allaah would accept his repentance.

However, we have to be certain that Allaah will guide us to success and safeguard us against our malice. We also must be confident that Allaah forgives our sins and that He, and only He, can judge us. It is only His Judgment that is worthy of our worry and anxiety. So we should fear Him only because sincere repentance removes all sins and disobedience.

The door of repentance is always open, until...

The door to repentance is always open and will not be closed in the face of any repentant person, regardless of his sins. Expect this gate to have two locks: death and the approach of the Day of Judgment. The first was mentioned in the Hadith: "Allaah accepts a slaves repentance unless his death approaches." [At-Tirmithi]

The other was mentioned in the Hadith: "Whosoever turns to Allaah in repentance before the sun rises in the West, Allaah will forgive him." [Ahmad]

Allaah Says in the Qur'aan what means: "But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says: Indeed, I have repented now, or of those who die while they are disbelievers..." [Qur'aan 4:18]

O heedless soul! Hasten to repent before the knock of death sounds and the time of repentance runs out. Do not get caught dying in a state of disobedience to your Most Merciful Lord. Satan gives you long hope and empty promises; he delays your repentance until your heart becomes as callous as a rock by being adamant in sin and disobedience, and you would therefore meet your Lord in a wretched state. If the door of repentance is closed to you, it will never open to you again.

What keeps us from repenting ?

1. Taking sins lightly:

The problem with many of us today is that we do not fear Allaah, which means that we do not think seriously about disobeying Him and therefore fall into sin, without giving any real thought to it.

Hence, we should think about the statement which Ibn Masood, may Allaah be pleased with him, made: "A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain which he is afraid may collapse on him, whereas the wicked person considers his sins as flies passing over his nose which he just drives away like this (and he waved his hand across his face to illustrate this)." [Al-Bukhari]

The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: "Take caution against minor sins, because such sins are like a group of people who temporarily settled in the middle of a valley. Then, they decided to make a fire, so each one of them brought a stick until they were able to make it, so they baked their bread. Thus, minor sins (when they accumulate) may destroy the one who commits them." [Ahmad]

 2. "What is the point? I will only end up doing it again"
Such an approach is the result of a  misunderstanding. Indeed, one of the conditions of repentance is having a real intention not to return to the same sin. This, however, does not mean that Satan will never tempt you to commit the same sin again. Thus, if you have failed yourself, and you returned to the same sin, it does not mean that your first repentance was a lie. You should hasten to make additional repentance, with a real intention not to return to this sin, keeping in mind that Allaahs mercy extends over everything.
3. "Allaah is forgiving, so let me sin"
When reminded of repentance and the hideousness of disobedience, some people would respond that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
An atheist once said in sarcasm: "You should commit as many sins as you can because you are heading towards the Lord who is Most-Generous." There is no doubt that such a view is complete ignorance of the religion of Allaah, because Allaahs mercy is close to the righteous and not to the wrongdoers.

4. "I am destined to be a sinner"
Some people may choose to blame Al-Qadr (fate) for their sins. For example, if you ask any of them, "Why do you not perform the Prayers? Why do you not fast? Why do you drink or smoke? Why do you not repent from your disobedience?" They would respond by saying: "This is Allaahs Qadr" or: "I am doomed to do this."

This is definitely a grave misconception and an evasion of the truth. Believing in Al-Qadr does not mean that one is destined to commit sins. It is true that Allaah has written all human beings deeds, good or bad, and only He knows the unseen, but the believer is not forced to perform a good deed, nor is he forced to commit any disobedience.

Instead, he has been granted the ability to reflect, reason and then make a decision freely. Al-Qadr is only responsible for the calamities and blessings that an individual may confront because he can do nothing about them.

Repentance wipes out all sins, major and minor:
Being confused, some people may think that repentance is only required for major sins. It should be noted that repentance from all sins is obligatory.
Even the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam who was sinless, asked Allaah to forgive him on a daily basis. The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam is reported to have said: "O people! Make repentance to Allaah. I swear by Allaah that I make repentance to Him more than seventy times every day." [Al-Bukhari]

Therefore, we all need to fear Allaah, ask His forgiveness and be aware that there is no sin that is minor with persistence, and no major sin with seeking Allaah's forgiveness (i.e. if the minor sin is repeated many times it becomes a major one.) Thus, sincere repentance wipes out all committed sins.

 Never despair!
Someone might say: "I want to repent but my sins are too many." But Allaah Says what means: "Say: O my slaves who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." [Qur'aan 39:53]

Repentance is such a great act of worship that doing it can erase all our sins altogether, as the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said: "One who repents from sin is like one without sin." [Ibn Maajah]
