Never judge a book by its cover!

Never judge a book by its cover!

( A Letter from A young girl in London)

Being a young 27 year old, in London, of course, I like to 'enjoy' my weekend and that involves clubbing, cinema, dining out and meeting new people. I also do drink alcohol (something of course, I now understand the religion of Islam prohibits very strictly) and I like partying. At this age of my life, every young girl and guy, want to just enjoy life and as the saying goes, 'Live Life To The Max'.

Last year, on Saturday 12th of December 2009, I was out clubbing in Central Londonwith my colleagues. I was dressed in a very tight dress that exposed my body to the other sex. Nothing I am now totally proud of, but thats how I did dress that night. It was Saturday, Xmas was a few weeks away, the Christmas spirit and youth was running through me; almost uncontrollable due to the prime of my youth.

I met a guy whilst partying, he seemed nice. We danced through the night till 2am. He seemed very decent , started to drink quite a bit and was ofcourse trying to get close to me. He managed to lure me through the back of the club, hence exiting via the lane through the Emergency exit. We did start to kiss and being a guy, he wanted to go further. Conveniently, he had his car in lane. He lured me into the back of the car and he wanted to go further. Although, him being under the influence of alchohol, I did know my limits and refused him to go any further.

He would not listen and I became slightly scared, he eventually started using his strong framework to hold me down. My heart was pumping, I begged him to let me go but he was out of control due. I knew my limits, having a 1 night stand was certainly a standard I would never drop to. I screamed for help but no one came. I was crying so much and was emotionally very uspet as you can imagine. I managed to smash the back window of the car using my leg and screamed for help. This 'animal' managed to take my dress off from the top and was was trying his best to basically 'rape' me. That time in the car  I wont ever forget. I was crying and begging for him to leave me. That time of struggle has stained and tarnished my memories for life.

And then, suddenly, an 'Angel' came to save me. A man with a beard came over, early 30's, with his strong hands pulled the guy out of the car ,threw him to the ground and kicked him a few times. The guy was so taken back , he fled and ran away. I was crying and half naked.

The man lowerd his gaze and took off his jacket. It was very cold and I put on his jacket. Around his neck was his taxi ID. I was at relief. He gave me a hankey and asked if I was ok. I looked at him and thanked him ever so much for saving my life, my respect and my dignity. He asked me if I wanted to call the Police as I was so shaken and upset. I thankfully did not get raped, I refused his offer  and just wanted to go home. He asked again, I said no, and then I asked him if he would take me home.  I was crying so much.

He said ,"Ofcourse madam, more than welcome", with such a soft tender voice.

As I approached his private hire taxi car, he refused to let me sit at the front of his taxi, and said ,

"Madam, would you mind if you sat at the back?". I had no problems with that. I was crying and he said,:  "Madam, you should not be out alone at this time of the night and you should stick with your friends. Further, you should not be so naive and just trust anyone you meet in a club". He was absolutely right.

Throughout the  long journey to my home, he hardly looked in the front mirror when talking to me and he spoke in a very soft tone. He had a long beard and had the beads hanging on his mirror. I recognised the beads as a Muslim colleague at work also had the beads on her car. I said to him, " You are a  Muslim arent you?" and he replied  "I sure am madam, and proud to be. I am born a Muslim and will die a Muslim"

He then said to me, "Do you want peace?"

I was confused and replied, " What do you mean?"

He then turned up his  CD player volume up and it was definetly not music ! He said , "This is the Quraan,May I ask you to listen to it for 5 minutes with full devotion please".

 I listened carefully.

It was a very different sound to the type of sounds I listen to and I did listen very carefully. And you know what? He was right, it was very peaceful, soothing and very relaxing. I enjoyed it ever so much,it was amazingly very peaceful to listen to and I was at ease.

He then asked , " How do you feel madam?"

I said ." Fantastic.. I really like that, it is indeed  very peaceful"

He responded , " Madam, these are the words of the Quraan. I am a Muslim. I have been taught by Islam to respect women, to lower my gaze and to respect everyone , no matter what religion they come from. You were lucky I heard you scream. I was at the corner of the lane, my tyre had burst. I now know why Allah made my tyre puncture and it was with His power that he allowed for me to save you, through the choice of  Allah.. You must accept this madam, you can thank me as much as you want, but I would suggest you say thanks to my Allah, for it was his choice for my tyre to puncture at that road and at that time"

I thought about what he said, he said his words very softly to me but equally, with so much devotion. He was a very nice man, a man who was my angel.

We came to my house, I invited him to come in for a coffee and he point blank refused. I went in, changed and came back to give him his jacket back. I then thanked him again, and asked ." How much Do I owe you?"

His reply hit me for 6, as he responded, " Madam, you have been through a very rough ordeal. Do you expect me to charge you? Just go home, relax and take it easy, I can imagine you will never forget this guy for years to come as to how he treated you and what could have happened. But I do ask you one thing please?"

I was so taken back and replied, " Please, go on"

He responded , " If you do tell anyone what happened, can you please tell everyone, that it was Muslim who came to help you? "

I said ,"Of course I will, this is the least I can do ". As soon as I said that, he responded, " Madam, I have to go now, I have a long drive ahead, I wish you all the best, please take this CD of the Quraan and do think about Islam, what Islam has to offer and how it can make you a better person"

I took the CD , thanked him with so much devotion and he left. I had tears from my eyes, this dude was a beautiful person.. And He Was A Muslim

A year on, I still have his CD and I do listen to it. I love listening to the Quraan, I do put it on at 5pm when I am stuck in London traffic ! I have explored Islam a lot more and I am also a member of The Islamic Email Circle where I receive the hadith on Monday and the Islamic article on Friday.

I would just like to say to all you Muslims out there:  Muslims are amazing people, they have a heart of Gold, they have beautiful principles, manners and they are very caring people. This dude taxi driver, was a beautiful person who I wont ever forget. His approach and manners has also changed my life. I can not understand why people are so scared of Muslim men with beards, they are the most beautiful and caring people in the world. Indeed they are Angels.

I am still exploring Islam and have learnt a lot. Maybe one day, I will revert to Islam, so I need to ask you to make 'Dua' for me.  But more importantly, I ask you to make 'Dua' for that taxi driver who saved my respect and life. I am sure your Allah will give him so much 'reward' . Dont You Agree?...

Thank you for taking time to read this

Kind regards

Why PORK is forbidden in Islam...??

PORK FORBIDDEN

Question:

Why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam?

Answer:

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The
following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in Qur'an

The Qur'an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places.
It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that
on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur'an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur'an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why
pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible
prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth
not the cud; he is unclean to you".

"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are
unclean to you."[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is
unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead
carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65
verse 2-5.

3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason,
logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types
of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm,
hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man's
terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its
ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the
body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it
can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it
enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs
of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception
about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project
undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering
from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This
indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking
temperature.

4. Pork has fat building material

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This
fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack.
It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.

5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck,
faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In
the villages they don't have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the
open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very
clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are
kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are
filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour's
excreta.

6. Pig is the most shameless animal

The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only
animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most
people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of
wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife."
If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We Indians look upon America to be
very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years.
According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has
become common in the affluent circles of Bombay.

6 ways to look and feel younger!

6 ways to look and feel younger!

Those who think that women are most petrified of gaining weight, here's some news! Her deepest fears are age related! Though ageing is inevitable, who says one cannot counter it. We help you slow the ageing process with these simple tips:

Save your skin
As you age, the first most obvious sign is the appearance of wrinkles. With age and improper beauty regime, our skin gets dry and rough which leads to wrinkles. One of the noticeable signs of ageing is the visibility of thin lines around our eyes, which are called crow's feet.

To add to the misery, there can be sun damage in the form of discolouration. So follow the 3-step beauty routine of scrubbing, toning, moisturizing and later slathering on plenty of sunscreen. And if wrinkles are bothering you a bit too much, botox isn't a bad option either. Olive oil also works wonders in banishing wrinkles.

Check your weight and exercise
To beat age related weight gain, experts say one must aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity a day. The form could be anything - yoga, aerobics, swimming, pilates, etc. Leena Mogre, fitness expert, says, "As you cross 30, a good mix of exercise is important. If you feel that your gut is expanding and your chest is softening, it's probably because you're not lifting weights."

The key to reaping the benefits of physical activity is sticking with it, so choose any exercise you enjoy. Do not forget facial exercises to firm your facial muscles.

Plan a plant based diet
Your diet should have a good mix of green vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans. "You should try to choose foods that represent a rainbow of colours, such as spinach, corn, tomatoes, bell pepper, strawberries, blueberry and grapes. Your food plate should have 75 per cent plant based food and rest should be lower fat sources of protein such as eggs, fish or meat. This diet helps you fight evils of ageing such as osteoporosis, diabetes and heart disease," says dietician Aishwarya Rajan.

Stress on calcium
Getting enough calcium as well as vitamin D help prevent osteoporosis which is the leading cause of bone fractures in women. Especially if you have crossed the age of 50, a daily dose of 1200 mg of calcium is necessary. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products, calcium-fortified soymilk, orange juice, and fish with edible bones (like canned salmon or sardines). You can talk to your doctor to know if you need additional supplements.

Sleep enough

Sleep is vital to the proper functioning of our body. While some of us may sleep for barely 5-6 hours at night, others maybe sound asleep for as much as 9-10 hours. But the average amount of sleep required is 7-8 hours. Instead of battling sleep in the daytime, take short power naps of 10-15 minutes as they too will make you feel rested.

Five Causes of Bad Breath

Five Causes of Bad Breath

It can spoil more than your social life

Bad breath will kill your social life, so it's reasonable that you should
figure out what may be causing it. Some causes, like spicy foods, are easy to fix,
but others may well point to something more serious.

But let's take this step by step.

How do you know you've got bad breath?
Well, people may be keeping their distance,
but may be too polite to tell you the real reason.

If you're lucky, someone will be direct, but failing that,
you can lick your wrist and smell your saliva - if it stinks,
your breath probably does too.

Ok, so you've got bad breath.
Let's look at the possible causes.

Smoking

Are you a smoker?
Smoking, aside from the many other obvious ways in which it is bad for you,
will make your breath smell of stale smoke. It will also irritate your gums
and may increase your risk of gum disease, which can also cause bad breath.

Solution?  Stop smoking.

Food

Next is food. If you like your garlic and onions raw,
you'll just have to choose between this particular passion and decent breath.
Alcohol and coffee also affect your breath, but fortunately you can get rid of
your bad breath by limiting your intake.

Solution?  Watch what you eat and drink.

Keep in mind that eating infrequently, or dieting can also cause bad breath.
This is also the case if you're not eating carbohydrates.
There, eat that croissant without guilt - it's good for your breath.

Hygiene

Of course, if you're casual about keeping your mouth clean,
no amount of cutting down on garlic will be of help.
The old "I'll brush in the morning" routine doesn't really cut it.

Your mouth is full of bacteria which cause plaque,
gum disease and dental decay.

When the bacteria are mixed with saliva and food trapped
between your teeth, a bad odour ensues.
The bacteria can also reside on your tongue,
which will also impact your bad breath.

Solution?  Obviously, floss and brush, at least twice a day.
Use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and take your time to
clean the teeth and scrape the tongue.

You can also rinse with anti bacterial mouthwash,
though this does not replace brushing your teeth,
no matter what your friends tell you. Visit a dentist.

Gum disease

So, after reading this article you've been diligent and keeping away
from the garlic and brushing furiously, but the bad breath persists?

Well, you might have gum disease or dental decay.
This is something that should immediately be addressed
by your dentist.

Medical problems

Though this is rare, your bad breath could actually
indicate a medical condition.

For instance, your mouth might not be producing enough saliva,
or you could have an infection in your lungs, throat or nose.
The bad breath could also indicate you have diabetes,
liver or kidney problems, or that you suffer from heart burn.

If you've been diligent about your oral cleanliness and the bad breath persists,
see your GP.

And if you're not quite concerned enough yet, here is something
that will make you brush as soon as you're done with this article.

Recent studies have confirmed that poor oral hygiene
can actually increase your risk of heart attack.

This is because poor hygiene can lead to bleeding gums,
which provide bacteria with a route into the bloodstream,
where they can initiate blood clots leading to heart disease.

what happens to your body if you stop smoking right now Within ...

#  20 minutes - Your blood pressure, pulse rate, and the temperature of your hands and feet will all return to normal.

# 8 hours - Remaining nicotine in your bloodstream will have fallen to 6.25% of normal peak daily levels, a 93.25% reduction.

# 12 hours - Your blood oxygen level will have increased to normal and carbon monoxide levels will have dropped to normal.

# 24 hours - Anxieties peak and within two weeks should return to near pre-cessation levels.

# 48 hours - Damaged nerve endings have started to regrow and your sense of smell and taste are beginning to return to normal. Cessation anger and irritability peaks.

# 72 hours - Your entire body will test 100% nicotine-free and over 90% of all nicotine metabolites (the chemicals it breaks down into) will now have passed from your body via your urine.  Symptoms of chemical withdrawal have peaked in intensity, including restlessness. The number of cue induced crave episodes will peak for the "average" ex-user. Lung bronchial tubes leading to air sacs (alveoli) are beginning to relax in recovering smokers. Breathing is becoming easier and the lungs functional abilities are starting to increase.

# 5 - 8 days - The "average" ex-smoker will encounter an "average" of three cue induced crave episodes per day. Although we may not be "average" and although serious cessation time distortion can make minutes feel like hours, it is unlikely that any single episode will last longer than 3 minutes. Keep a clock handy and time them.

# 10 days - The "average ex-user is down to encountering less than two crave episodes per day, each less than 3 minutes.

# 10 days to 2 weeks - Recovery has likely progressed to the point where your addiction is no longer doing the talking. Blood circulation in our gums and teeth are now similar to that of a non-user.

# 2 to 4 weeks - Cessation related anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, impatience, insomnia, restlessness and depression have ended. If still experiencing any of these symptoms get seen and evaluated by your physician.

# 21 days - Brain acetylcholine receptor counts up-regulated in response to nicotine's presence have now down-regulated and receptor binding has returned to levels seen in the brains of non-smokers.

# 2 weeks to 3 months - Your heart attack risk has started to drop. Your lung function is beginning to improve.

# 3 weeks to 3 months - Your circulation has substantially improved. Walking has become easier. Your chronic cough, if any, has likely disappeared.

# 1 to 9 months - Any smoking related sinus congestion, fatigue or shortness of breath have decreased. Cilia have regrown in your lungs thereby increasing their ability to handle mucus, keep your lungs clean, and reduce infections. Your body's overall energy has increased.

# 1 year - Your excess risk of coronary heart disease has dropped to less than half that of a smoker.

# 5 to 15 years - Your risk of stroke has declined to that of a non-smoker.

# 10 years - Your risk of death from lung cancer has declined by almost half if you were an average smoker (one pack per day).  Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus has now decreased.

# 15 years - Your risk of coronary heart disease is now that of a person who has never smoked.

Zina : The Easy Option..

In the Name of Allaah,

the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

 Zina : The Easy Option

 Taken from

All praise is due to Allaah, the One Who says:

[And do not come near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. ]

(Al-Israa 17:32)

And peace and blessings be upon His slave and Messenger Muhammad, who said, "When a man commits fornication, faith departs from him and there is something like a canvas roof over his head; and when he quits that action, faith returns to him"

(Abu Dawud 40:4673).

Undoubtedly, all Muslims are aware of the prohibition of adultery and fornication. However, many of us live in a Western society where this crime has become widespread and commonly accepted. This crime has even crept into some Muslim homes to the extent that we find some who are proud to see their son entering the house with a girl accompanying him.

This article will define adultery and fornication in Islam; it will discuss the punishment for them and the status of ones marriage to one who commits either of them; and it will advise how to repent and how to protect yourself from them.

In todays English, unlawful sexual intercourse by a married person is called adultery; sexual intercourse by an unmarried person is called fornication.

Unlike English, Arabic has only one word for both cases — zina.

Throughout the history of religions, zina always has been prohibited; however, its prohibition is more emphatic and forceful in Islam.

Zina is regarded as one of the gravest of all the major sins.

Over fourteen hundred years ago, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prophesied that among the signs of the Day of Judgment is the prevalence of illegal sexual intercourse.

Anas ibn Malik reported Allaah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying, "It is from the conditions of the Last Hour that knowledge would be taken away and ignorance would prevail (upon the world), liquor would be drunk, and adultery would become rampant" (Muslim 34:6451).

Prophet Muhammad (saws) viewed zina as a serious crime. It is reported that Allaahs Messenger (saws) ordered that an unmarried man who committed illegal sexual intercourse be scourged one hundred lashes and sent into exile for one year (Al-Bukhari 3:48 817).

A person has committed zina if he or she voluntarily and deliberately performs sexual intercourse with other than his or her spouse. The act of zina has taken place when the mans sexual organ has been inserted inside the womans , regardless of the number of times or whether contraception was used, such as a condom or separator between the consenting adults organs.

Proving Zina

A person is convicted of zina by one or more of the following ways:
If the zaani (fornicator or adulterer) makes a confession without going back on his or her word until he or she is subjected to any prescribed punishment. If at some stage the person retracts the confession, he or she must not be subjected to any prescribed punishment.

The testimony to the act of four reliable and pious men, each of whom must testify that he actually saw the mans sexual organ inserted inside the womans.

This stringent condition is to protect innocent Muslims and to block the road for those who want to spread evil among the Muslim society.

If a woman who is not married is found pregnant.
Punishment for Zina in This Life

There are definite prescribed punishments known as hadd (plural: hudud), which have been mentioned in the Qur'aan and the Sunnah concerning those who engage in the criminal act.

The following conditions must be fulfilled before the hadd is applied:
1. The offenders must be sane.
2. They must be Muslim.
3. They have reached the age of puberty.
4. They must be free and not slaves.

The Qur'aanic injunctions with regards to those who commit zina were revealed in stages.

The wisdom behind this was to make these injunctions acceptable to the newconverts to Islam who often engaged in zina during the days of Jahiliyah (ignorance).

The first revelation concerning the punishment of zina was that a woman guilty of zina was to be confined to her home until she died (An-Nisaa 4:15).

The second revelation covered both men and women and was not very specific regarding punishment:
[And as for the two who are guilty of indecency from among you, give them both a punishment; then if they repent and amend, turn aside from them; surely Allaah is Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.] (An-Nisaa 4:16)

Allaah Almighty then revealed:
[(As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of obedience to Allaah and the last day.] (An-Nur 24:2)

Know that punishment for this crime of zina acts as atonement for this sin. The idea behind the harsh and severe punishment does not contradict the spirit of Islam; it actually serves as a deterrent in society. It protects a persons family lineage and the spread of moral decadence and disease in society.

When people realize the graveness of their sin, and that its punishment is most humiliating and painful, very few would dare to commit it.

Marriage to a Person Guilty of Zina

Marriage between two who are guilty of zina is permissible as per what Allaah Almighty says:
[The fornicator shall not marry any but a fornicatress or idolatress, and (as for) the fornicatress, none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; and it is forbidden to the believers."] (An-Nur 24:3)

There is a difference of opinion among the scholars with regards to a chaste man marrying an adulteress who has not repented or vice versa. Some of them said that it is not lawful.

This is the opinion of Ali, Al-Baraa, Aishah, and Masud (may Allaah be pleased with them all).

The majority of scholars, including Abu BakrUmar or Uthman, and Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with them all), on the other hand, permitted marriage with an adulterer, adding however, that marriage to a chaste and pure person was more virtuous.

Repentance

One might think that the only way a person guilty of zina can be forgiven is by undergoing the prescribed punishment (hadd), but scholars have said that a person who commits a sin should repent to Allaah Almighty.

The repentance should be sincere, and the guilty person should perform lots of righteous acts and acts of worship. Furthermore, the person should feel remorse and have no intention of ever committing the sin again.

The repentance will not be accepted if it is done during the throes of death, as Allaah Most High says
[And repentance is not for those who go on doing evil deeds, until when death comes to one of them, he says: Surely now I repent; nor (for) those who die while they are unbelievers.] (An-Nisaa' 4:18)

Protection From Committing Zina

There are many ways that Muslims can protect themselves from zina. Salah (prayer), both obligatory and supererogatory, is one of the strongest defenses against zina. Allaah Almighty says
[Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allaah is the greatest.]

(Al-Ankabut 29:45)

Regular fasting is another way of suppressing sexual desires, as Allaahs Messenger (saws) prescribed it for young people who could not afford to get married.

Another way to keep away from zina is by reminding yourself how you would abhor and dislike it for your mother, daughter, sister, brother, and aunt.

This was how Prophet Muhammad (saws) explained it to a man who came seeking permission to commit zina. The Prophet told him to remember that Satan watches and waits for you to be distant from your Muslim brethren, then he makes his attack. And so among the things that will deter you from zina is to always be in the company of righteous people who will remind you of Allaah Almighty.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the hadith collection of Abu Dawud, "Indeed the wolf devours the lone sheep." Remember that saying "no" to someone who invites you to commit zina will secure you a place of shelter under the shade of Allaah's throne on the day when their will be no shelter except His.

We ask Allaah Most High to protect us from the evil of zina, to accept our righteous actions, and to shower us with His bounties in this life and in the hereafter.

Aameen!!!

Internet Addiction : Signs, Symptoms, Treatment, and Self-Help.

Internet Addiction
Signs, Symptoms, Treatment, and Self-Help

We all enjoy the benefits of the Internet, and for many of us it is also an indispensable tool for work, education, and communication. While time spent on the Internet can be hugely productive, for some people compulsive Internet use can interfere with daily life, work and relationships.

When you feel more comfortable with your online friends than your real ones, or you can't stop yourself from playing games, gambling, or compulsively surfing, even when it has negative consequences in your life, then you may be using the Internet too much. Learn about the signs and symptoms of Internet addiction and how you can get balance back in your online life.

What is Internet addiction or computer addiction?

Internet Addiction, otherwise known as computer addiction, online addiction, or internet addiction disorder (IAD), covers a variety of impulse-control problems, including:

Cybersex Addiction – compulsive use of Internet pornography, adult chat rooms, or adult fantasy role-play sites impacting negatively on real-life intimate relationships.

Cyber-Relationship Addiction – addiction to social networking, chat rooms and messaging to the point where virtual, online friends become more important than real-life relationships with family and friends.

Net Compulsions – such as compulsive online gaming, gambling, stock trading, or compulsive use of online auction sites such as eBay, often resulting in financial and job-related problems.

Information Overload – compulsive web surfing or database searching, leading to lower work productivity and less social interaction with family and friends.

Computer Addiction – obsessive playing of off-line computer games, such as Solitaire or Minesweeper, or obsessive computer programming.

The most common of these Internet addictions are cybersex, online gambling, and cyber-relationship addiction.

Healthy vs. unhealthy Internet use

The Internet provides a constant, ever-changing source of information and entertainment. Email, blogs, social networks, and message boards allow for both public and anonymous communication about any topic. But how much is too much Internet usage?

Each person's Internet use is different. You might need to use the Internet extensively for your work, for example, or you might rely heavily on social networking sites to keep in touch with faraway family and friends. Spending a lot of time online only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your relationships, your work, school, or other important things in your life. If you keep repeating compulsive Internet behavior despite the negative consequences in your offline life, then it's time to strike a new balance.

How do people become addicted to the Internet?
To relieve unpleasant and overwhelming feelings

Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. When you have a bad day and are looking for a way to escape your problems or to quickly relieve stress or self-soothe, the Internet can be an easily accessible outlet. Losing yourself online can temporarily make feelings such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air. As much comfort as the Internet can provide, though, it's important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises.

For many people, an important aspect of overcoming Internet and computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings. Even when your Internet use is back to healthy levels, the painful and unpleasant feelings that may have prompted you to engage in unhealthy Internet use in the past will remain. So, it's worth spending some time thinking about the different ways you intend to deal with stressful situations and the daily irritations that would normally have you logging on.
Risk factors for Internet addiction and computer addiction

You are at greater risk of Internet addiction if:

You suffer from anxiety. You may use the Internet to distract yourself from your worries and fears. An anxiety disorder like obsessive-compulsive disorder may also contribute to excessive email checking and compulsive Internet use.

You are depressed. The Internet can be an escape from feelings of depression, but too much time online can make things worse. Internet addiction further contributes to stress, isolation and loneliness.
You have any other addictions. Many Internet addicts suffer from other addictions, such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, and sex.

You lack social support. Internet addicts often use social networking sites, instant messaging, or online gaming as a safe way of establishing new relationships and more confidently relating to others.
You're an unhappy teenager, you might be wondering where you fit in and the Internet might feel more comfortable than real life friends.

You are less mobile or socially active than you are used to. For example, you may be coping with a new disability that limits your ability to drive. Parenting very young children can make it hard to leave the house or connect with old friends.

You are stressed. While some people use the Internet to relieve stress, it can have a counterproductive effect. The longer you spend online, the higher your stress levels will be.

Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction or computer addiction:

Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction vary from person to person. For example, there are no set hours per day or number of messages sent that indicate Internet addiction. But here are some general warning signs that your Internet use may have become a problem:

Losing track of time online. Do you frequently find yourself on the Internet longer than you intended? Does a few minutes turn in to a few hours? Do you get irritated or cranky if your online time is interrupted?

Having trouble completing tasks at work or home. Do you find laundry piling up and little food for dinner in the house because you've been busy online? Perhaps you find yourself working late more often because you can't complete your work on time — then staying even longer when everyone else has gone home so you can surf the Web freely.

Isolation from family and friends. Is your social life suffering because of all the time you spend online? Are you neglecting your family and friends? Do you feel like no one in your "real" life — even your spouse — understands you like your online friends?

Feeling guilty or defensive about your Internet use. Are you sick of your spouse nagging you to get off the computer and spend time together? Do you hide your Internet use or lie to your boss and family about the amount of time you spend on the computer and what you do while online?

Feeling a sense of euphoria while involved in Internet activities. Do you use the Internet as an outlet when stressed, sad, or for sexual gratification or excitement? Have you tried to limit your Internet time but failed?
Physical symptoms of Internet addiction

Internet or computer addiction can also cause physical discomfort such as:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (pain and numbness in hands and wrists)
Dry eyes or strained vision
Back aches and neck aches; severe headaches
Sleep disturbances
Pronounced weight gain or weight loss
Internet addiction: Cybersex and pornography

While online pornography and cybersex addictions are types of sexual addiction, special challenges on the Internet include its relative anonymity and ease of access. People can spend hours on the net in the privacy of their own home, and engage in fantasies impossible in real life.

Compulsively spending hours on the Internet viewing pornography or engaging in other cybersex activities can adversely affect real-life relationships, career, and emotional health.
What's the difference between healthy and unhealthy sexuality?

For most adults, healthy sexuality is an integrated life experience. Sex with partners, with self, or as a part of exploring new relationships is usually a pleasurable act of choice. For sexual addicts however, sexual behavior can be most often defined by words such as driven, compulsive and hidden. Unlike healthy sex that is integrated into relationships, sexual addicts use sex as a means to cope, to handle boredom, anxiety and other powerful feelings or as a way to feel important, wanted or powerful.

Internet addiction: Online gambling

While gambling has been a well-documented problem for years, the availability of Internet gambling has made gambling far more accessible. It has also made it harder for recovering addicts to avoid relapse. Online or virtual casinos are open all day, every day for anyone with Internet access. People who don't live within close proximity of a traditional casino or betting track, for example, or even those who are too young to gain access, now find it much easier to gamble online.

Other net compulsions

Net compulsions such as compulsive stock trading or online auction shopping can be just as financially and socially damaging as online gambling. eBay addicts, for example, may wake up at strange hours in order to be online for the last remaining minutes of an online auction. They may purchase things they don't need and can't afford in order to experience the excitement of placing the winning bid.
Compulsive online gamers can isolate themselves for many hours at a time participating in virtual reality or online fantasy games, neglecting other aspects of their lives such as work and family.
Internet addiction: Cyber-relationships

When used responsibly, the Internet can be a great place to interact socially, meet new people, and even start romantic relationships. However, online relationships can often be more intense than those in real life. Our fantasies are given free reign and the idea of being with our online love can exceed all realistic expectations. Since few real-life relationships can compete with these wild, fantasy relationships, the Internet addict will prefer to spend more and more time with their online friends.

Another problem is that about 50% of people online lie about their age, weight, job, marital status, or gender. When online friends meet and the real-life person fails to match the online persona, it can create profound emotional disappointment.

Self-help tips for breaking your Internet addiction

The following are tools to get your Internet use under control. While you can put many of these in place yourself, make sure you get some outside support as well. It's all too easy to slip back into old patterns of usage, especially if you use the Internet heavily for work.
Recognize any underlying problems that may support your Internet addiction. If you are struggling with depression, stress, or anxiety, for example, Internet addiction might be a way to self-soothe rocky moods. Have you had problems with alcohol or drugs in the past? Does anything about your Internet use remind you of how you used to drink or use drugs to numb out? Recognize if you need to address treatment in these areas, such as therapy, or returning to group support meetings.
Build your coping skills. Perhaps blowing off steam on the Internet is your way of coping with stress or angry feelings. Or maybe you have trouble relating to others, or are excessively shy with people in real life. Building skills in these areas will help you weather the stresses and strains of daily life without resorting to compulsive Internet use.

See: Raising Emotional Intelligence for more information on building your coping skills
Strengthen your support network. The more relationships you have in real life, the less you will need the Internet for social interaction. Set aside dedicated time each week for friends and family. If you are shy, try finding common interest groups such as a sports team, education class, or book reading club. This allows you to interact with others and let relationships develop naturally.
Modify your Internet use step by step:

To help you see problem areas, keep a log of how much you use the Internet for non-work or non-essential activities. Are there times of day that you use the Internet more? Are there triggers in your day that make you stay online for hours at a time when you planned for just 5 minutes?

Set goals for when you can use the Internet. For example, you might try setting a timer, scheduling use for certain times of day, or making a commitment to turn off the computer at the same time each night. Or you could reward yourself with a certain amount of online time once you've completed a homework assignment or finished the laundry, for instance.

Replace your Internet usage with healthy activities. If you are bored and lonely, resisting the urge to get back online can be very difficult. Have a plan for other ways to fill the time, such as going to lunch with a coworker, taking a class, or inviting a friend over.

Tips for dealing with Internet addiction:

Ask yourself, "What am I missing out on when I spend so much time on the "Net?" Write these activities down and decrease your Internet time to do some of these activities.

Set reasonable Internet use goals and stick to them. Take frequent breaks, at least 5 minutes each hour, and do some other activity.

Alter your routine to break your usage patterns. If you spend evenings on the Internet, start limiting your use to mornings.

Seek out friends and acquaintances who "couldn't care less" about the Internet. Take time to appreciate the fact that all life is not yet online.

Stay connected to the offline world. Visit newsstands, book and music stores, and participate in entertainment such as museums, music, and live theater. Novels and poetry readings are hard to experience online.

Treat the Internet as a tool. Stay focused on the fact that the Internet is a means to an end. Plan your strategy—whether you're looking for information or entertainment—with the end in mind and you'll save valuable time.

Internet addiction treatment, counseling, and support:

Therapy and counseling for Internet addiction

Therapy can give you a tremendous boost in controlling Internet use. Cognitive-behavioral therapy provides step-by-step ways to stop compulsive Internet behaviors, working with a therapist on changing your thoughts and behaviors surrounding Internet use. Therapy can also help you learn healthier ways of coping with uncomfortable emotions. And if depression or anxiety is contributing to your excessive Internet use, therapy can also address that problem.

If your Internet use is affecting your partner directly, as with excessive cybersex or online affairs, marriage counseling can help you work through these challenging issues. Marriage counseling can also help you reconnect with your partner if you have been using the Internet for most of your social needs.
Group support for Internet addiction

Since Internet addiction is relatively new, it can be hard to find a real life support group dedicated to the issue like Alcoholics Anonymous or Gamblers Anonymous. If that is a simultaneous problem for you, however, attending groups can help you work through your alcohol or gambling problems as well. Sex Addicts anonymous may be another place to try if you are having trouble with cybersex. There may also be groups where you can work on social and coping skills, such as for anxiety or depression.

There are some Internet addiction support groups on the Internet. However, these should be used with caution. Although they may be helpful in orienting you and pointing you in the right direction, you need real life people to best benefit from group support.

Helping a friend or family member with Internet addiction
Tips to helping others with Internet addiction

Be a good role model. Manage the Internet and computer use in your own life well.

Introduce the Internet addict to other people who handle their Internet use sensibly.

Get your friend involved in non-Internet related interests.

Talk to your friend about your concerns with their Internet use.

Support their desire for change if they think they have a problem.

Encourage them to seek professional counseling.

Helping a child or teen with an Internet addiction

It's a fine line as a parent. If you severely limit a child or teen's Internet use, they might rebel and go to excess. But you should monitor computer use, supervise computer activity and get your child help if he or she needs it. If your child or teen is showing signs of Internet addiction, there are things that you can do to help:

Encourage other interests and social activities. Get your child out from behind the computer screen. Expose kids to other hobbies and activities, such as team sports, Scouts, and afterschool clubs.

Monitor computer use and set clear limits. Make sure the computer is in a common area of the house where you can keep an eye on your child's online activity, and limit time online. This will be most effective if you as parents follow suit. If you can't stay offline, chances are your children won't either.

Talk to your child about underlying issues. Compulsive computer use can be the sign of deeper problems. Is your child having problems fitting in? Has there been a recent major change, like a move or divorce, which is causing stress?

Get help. Teenagers often rebel against their parents but if they hear the same information from a different authority figure, they may be more inclined to listen.Try a sports coach, doctor, or respected family friend. Don't be afraid to seek professional counseling if you are concerned about your child.
